By Captain Mark Ferguson
August 11, 2007

On Thursday at approximately 4:00pm, during the height of a severe thunderstorm, station 87 responded to 1006 Attilio Court for a reported smoke coming from the roof. Upon arrival, assistant 87-2 reported a working fire in the attic of the home. With the assistance of all Penn Township fire departments, as well as Westmoreland City, Manor, North Irwin and Penn VFD's the fire was extinguished within an hour. Crews remained on scene for several hours performing salvage and overhaul operations.

On Saturday, at 12:48am, tones rang out for the same address reporting fire through the roof of the residence. Other departments assisting on the alarm were Claridge, Manor, Jeannette, Irwin and North Irwin. Engine 87 went in route within minutes with 6 firefighters. Within a mile of the scene, fire could be seen venting from the roof top of this very large single family home. Chief 87 held command requesting engine 87 pick up the plug and lay into the scene. Claridge's engine two was next in followed by Jeannette's tower ladder (Truck 87 is temporarily out of service). An exterior attack was performed due to the heavy fire volume within the structure. Once the bulk of the fire was extinguished, crews entered the structure and performed an extensive overhaul operation.

The cause of this fire is currently under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal.
