By Captain Mark Ferguson
June 22, 2007

Every year, station 87 gladly assists Murrysville VFD (station 20) by sending a truck crew for a fireworks standby at their annual carnival. The main purpose of the standby is to protect exposures once the fireworks display begins. This year was no different with 6 firefighters volunteering to assist, readying themselves for an evening of funnel cakes, lemonade and hot sausage sandwiches capped off with fireworks.

Just as the truck 87 was entering the picnic grounds at station 20, a working house fire was being dispatched on Scott Avenue in the city of Jeannette (Station 112). Once a working fire was confirmed, command 112 requested truck 87 to the scene (20:48 hours). Truck 87 acknowledge the alarm, en-route with an extended ETA from Murrysville. Command 112 added truck 79-2 (City of Greensburg) to the alarm due to our current location. Also responding on the alarm was engine 94 (Penn Boro), Air 79-2 and Salvage 24 (Southwest Greensburg).

Truck 87 made good time arriving on scene at 21:03 hours with a reserved parking spot in front of the house. Command 112 requested the roof opened up and as well as some general overhauling. Crews from 112 made quick work of the bedroom fire, containing it the room of origin. Engine 94 laid a supply line into truck 87 however no water was needed (from the truck). A crew from salvage 24 utilized the tower to cover the ventilation hole in the roof and all units were cleared at approximately 23:00 hours. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation

To our Murrysville brothers, you can count on us (hopefully) next year!!
