Shortly after 11:00 this morning, station 87 was dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at St. Barbara church in Harrison City. The initial alarm brought engines from Claridge (E63-2) and Manor (E13) as well as Jeannette's tower ladder truck (TL112) to assist 87 units. Seconds after dispatch, 911 dispatchers advised responding units that they've received several calls reporting a smoke condition inside the church. There were several hundred parishioners inside the building attending mass at the time of the alarm. Station 87 responded with truck and engine 87. Assistant 87-1 arrived on scene within minutes reporting the source of the smoke was from a small brush fire near the air handling units. The fire was extinguished by a church fire extinguisher. Chief 87 requested ventilation trucks from Jeannette and Irwin to assist with smoke removal from the structure. All 87 units were cleared in about 90 minutes.
