Knowing that the we would need additional assistance the Westmoreland Animal Response Team (CART) along with Mangery and Son crane service were summoned to assist in the rescue effort of the 31 year old horse. CART took a newly obtained harness to the scene, and Mangery & Sons provided an off-road forklift and labor to assist in the rescue of the horse. The forklift held the harness in place to support the horse until he made it uphill and near the barn. By 6:30 p.m., the horse was back in the stable. Harrison City VFD would like to thank the members of the CART team as well as Frank Mangery, Jr. of Mangery and Son Crane for the successful rescue of the horse. Apparently a vehicle left the roadway and plunged 150+ feet down an embankment sometime during the early morning hours. The driver self-extricated and was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. The incident is currently under investigation. Chief 63 arrived on scene confirmed entrapment requested doors removed from a vehicle which had a patient trapped in the front passenger seat. The rescue crew assisted Claridge firefighters removing the front and rear doors on passenger side, cutting the B post at roof and using the hydraulic ram to lay the side of the vehicle down. The patient was extricated in approx. 15 minutes and was airlifted to a Pittsburgh Trauma Center. Afterwards, HC volunteers, assisted at our annual comedy show. Over 350 people attend the show this year featuring comedian Mark Eddie. We would like to thank everyone who attended this year's show making it a very successful fundraiser for the department. This year, nearly 300 people enjoyed good food, good drink and good conversation throughout the evening while attempting to win a prize. The event was very successful thanks to the hard work of our volunteer firefighters, their wives and in some cases their adult children. Thank you to everyone. Now, on to our next major fundraiser in two weeks...our annual comedy show. Paintertown and Claridge VFD's were also on the first alarm assignment. Truck 87 arrived to find a moderate smoke condition in the house. Truck 87 was utilized to check the chimney while interior crews check the fireplace and interior walls with thermal imaging cameras. The cause of the smoke was due to a mal-functioning chimney clean-out. All units returned in service in approximately 45 minutes. Rescue 87 went en route with 5 firefighters. Shortly thereafter turnpike response personnel confirmed entrapment of 2-patients. Chief 87 requested rescue 57 (Irwin) to assist. Rescue 87 arrived on scene to find one tri-axel milk truck with on its side, one ford expedition with two patients entrapped and one pedestrian who was down on the roadway being attended to by Penn Township EMS. The rescue crew cribbed the vehicle and prepared for a total sidewall removal. This process was completed timely and both patients were extricated from the vehicle within 10 minutes. Rescue 57 was redirected to station 87 for standby prior to arriving on scene. Two patients were flown from the scene, with both medical helicopters landing in the westbound lanes on the turnpike. Rescue 87 remained on scene for nearly 3.5 hours providing lighting for the state police. Due to PA turnpike policy, no pictures were taken from this accident scene. Other departments on the first alarm assignment included Westmoreland City, Manor and Paintertown VFD's. Assistant 87-1 and Penn Township police arrived on scene quickly confirming a working fire and went to work with multiple fire extinguishers. Their quick action knocked the bulk of fire down containing it to the garage. Truck and Engine 87 arrived to provide final fire suppression, overhaul and ventilation as there was a heavy smoke condition throughout the house. Jeannette and High Park fire departments were also on the first alarm assignment. Shortly after going en-route with 6 firefighters, rescue 87 was advised that there were no injuries associated with this accident however one male occupant was unable to get out of the vehicle. Jeannette engine 112 along with attack 106 and rescue 87 arrived on scene, removed the windshield and extricated the occupant of a pickup truck on its side. Rescue 87 was back in service at 01:00. Irwin and surrounding fire departments were operating at a barn fire on Schade Hill Road in the Larimer section of North Huntingdon Township. Engine 87 responded to the stand by with four firefighters. While en-route to Irwin, engine 87 was requested to the scene to assist in completing a 2700+foot hose lay to support fire ground operations. Engine 87 met up with engine 8 (Circleville) and proceed to drop our entire 1500 feet of five inch supply hose which brought us to the fire scene (barely) to feed tanker 1 (Larimer). Once tanker 1 was filled the order was given to wrap up and return. Oh well...at least we had a chance to flip the hose....right? Engine 87 was back in service at approximately 17:30. Truck, Engine and Rescue 87 responded with over 16 firefighters to assist. Police arrived on scene quickly and reported a working fire with possible entrapment. North Irwin's engine 12 along with Paintertown's quint 7 and truck 87 arrived on scene at approximately the same time and went to work. Crews from 87 truck and quint 7 opened up the roof while others from 87, 7, 12 and 63 (Claridge VFD) began the initial interior attack and primary search. Level Green's rescue 9 established a water supply into truck 87 and quint 7. Irwin and Circleville VFD were on RIT assignment. Grapeville VFD assisted with their foam unit. There was no entrapment of any occupants in the building. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in approximately 20 minutes with extensive overhaul lasting several hours. Fortunately, this was only a drill to emphasize to all students who will be attending the prom this Friday night the potential consequences of drinking and driving. As the call was dispatched a unit from Penn Township ambulance arrived to find a working fire in the engine compartment of a passenger car. The car was parked in the parking lot of the CVS pharmacy. Efforts to extinguish the fire by a passerby with a fire extinguisher failed and the fire continued to burn. Within minutes Engine 87 arrived and a hoseline was stretched to extinguish the fire. The operator of Engine 87 hooked up the department's foam inductor to achieve a more efficient knockdown on the fire. The hose crew forced the hood and extinguished the fire before the fire could reach the passenger compartment of the vehicle. All 87 units were clear within 30 min and the scene was turned over to the Penn Township Police. Once on scene, air shoring and cribbing were utilized to stabilize the vehicle. Additionally, HC firefighters removed the passenger side door on the van to remove the patient from the vehicle. Departments responding on the first alarm included Claridge, Harrison City, Paintertown, Level Green, Grandview, North Irwin, Penn, and Export VFD's. Chief 63 arrived on scene reporting heavy fire on the first and second floors. He requested his engine to the front of the structure along with Truck 87 and the second incoming engine to pick up the plug at the corner of Duncan and Koter. Engine 63-2 arrived on scene followed by truck 87. Engine 87 picked up the plug and established a water supply into truck 87. Various hand lines were placed into service in addition to the tower so that a quick knock down could be established. Due to the heavy fire volume, the second floor was burned away prior to the arrival of initial fire crews. The fire was under control within 45 minutes. Fire units remained on scene until approximately 04:00 due to the extensive overhaul which needed completed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
